Finding Fashion Inspo

Does everything in your closet seem old and tired? You planned this FIRE monochrome blush outfit with a pair of Tiffany & Co. diamond earrings and now it doesn’t look as good as it did last night in the mirror. (I would still wear the earrings though because you can never wrong with diamond earrings).

It’s time to find something new for your closet. In fact, what you need are NEW sources of fashion inspiration. I have listed my OWN platforms where I created vision boards for my styling gigs, bought pieces for my closet, and was introduced to new fashion labels. Inspiration can be found in the most ordinary places, but this is where I go to become inspired.

PINTEREST

The KING of INSPIRATION! This is where I start whenever I need to put pieces together for a LOOK! If you don’t know already, Pinterest allows you to compile photos from uploaded outfits to save them to “boards” which you can literally organize however you like. All you have to do is type in a keyword and select your favorite photos. From dog outfits to museums in Tokyo, there are photos of everything. You can have whatever you like (T.I. voice).

TV/MOVIES

Is there a TV show or film that you have been obsessed with lately?  Maybe one of the characters has an amazing article of clothing on? “A look” literally distracts you from the plot and makes you start putting a killer outfit together. There is a lot of hidden inspiration in all of these shows. Start paying attention to what your favorite characters wear. (This is what costume designers do best!) Some of my favorite sources of inspiration are the Devil Wears Prada, Sex and the City, Ocean’s 8, Purple Rain and Eve’s Bayou.

MAGAZINES

Everything is so digital that the old paper book magazine is ignored. But baby, don’t sleep on them! The fashion ads, editorial shoots, travel stories, architecture and trends prolong fashion’s influence on pop culture. (Plus, you can have paper and digital copies of your magazine now!) I won’t tell you to go pay for another subscription (we don’t have time in THIS economy). Some of my favorites are industry standards like Vogue, Essence, Cosmopolitan, and W.

INSTAGRAM

I take it back. Instagram is NEW king. Influencers are paid for their fashion posts on Instagram and provide more access to similar body shapes and outfit inspirations. (Whether or not I like everything that’s being posted is another conversation.)

Most influencers are not professional models who wear fresh off the runway looks every day. Follow your favorite influencers, explore their follower list for new people to follow, and utilize the hashtags under their posts for more inspiration.

Word of Caution: These hashtags CAN become too repetitive if you follow them too religiously.

RUNWAY

Ahh…the original fashion trend setters. Trends are still birthed on the runway, but some runway shows can be too abstract to translate for everyday wear. Every year in February and September, new designers debut new lines of clothing for the fashion consumer. Decades worth of content is available to dig through at the Vogue Runway app. It is something I love and use to remain updated on the latest Marchesa or Zuhair Murad show.

That about wraps up my tips for finding fashion inspiration! Where do you find inspiration? If you use anything other than what I mentioned, then let me know! I’m always down to more places to look!
